1. Tell us about yourself and your business.

I live in Vancouver, B.C., where it's sometimes sunny (if it's not raining). If I'm not playing with my three-and-a-half-year-old daughter Eva, I'm out walking my high-energy Labradoodle named Rufus.

From the business side, I've worked in the fitness industry for about 16 years as a group fitness instructor, international presenter and program director. I also worked as vice president for a chain of all-women clubs.

I still teach fitness classes and present workshops at fitness conferences, but my main career these days is as a fitness writer, editor and consultant. My business, called Active Voice, involves four major streams:

1) Magazine Writer: I write health and fitness articles for trade and consumer magazines, including ACE Certified News, IDEA Fitness Journal, Prevention, Best Health and SELF.

2) Book Author: I co-author or ghostwrite books for other fitness pros. I wrote my first two fitness books last year, one for a publisher in California and one for Barnes & Noble's publishing company.

3) Editor and Consultant: I help fitness pros and organizations improve the quality and effectiveness of their marketing and educational material.

3) Product Creator: My information products are geared specifically to fitness pros to help them enjoy greater success with fitness writing, publicity and marketing.

2. How has being a part of PTU impacted your career / business?

Being part of PTU has allowed me to get to know a lot of personal trainers who work in the fitness field, which has been invaluable, not only as a networking tool, but also as a way to learn more about what information personal trainers need and want the most. Plus, PTU has been an excellent way to find experts to quote in my articles. I have been able to quote some really cool trainers from PTU - who also happen to have a lot of expertise and insight about the personal training profession. Finally, it's nice to be able to learn about how other fitness professionals are making their businesses more successful - it helps me do the same.

3. What are your 3 biggest tips for your fellow PTU Members?

1. Know yourself well enough to take full advantage of your best skills, interests and passions in the fitness profession. Delegate the rest.

2. Avoid getting stuck at the point of intention when it comes to achieving what you want. Take action, but never sacrifice quality for quantity. Everything you put out there (e.g., articles, products, ebooks, boot camp classes, blog posts, video clips, affiliate links, newsletters) reflects you and your business.

3. Don't waste time reinventing the wheel. Take advantage of the content on PTU to help you achieve success with your fitness business.
