1. Tell us about yourself and your business.

I've always been interested in exercise and health & fitness. So once I realized there were college degrees in this field and I could truly make it my career I dove into it headfirst. I started working at a health club and also personal training my own clients when I was still in undergrad. I enjoyed this at the time but after finishing grad school I decided to open my own private personal training studio. We were recognized as one of the top studios in the country within the first year I had it open. I later sold that original studio upon moving to a new city 4 years ago which is my wife's hometown. I then opened up another personal training studio here which has also been very successful. So I've now owned my own personal training studios for just over 5 years and I also started an outdoor women's boot camp business in January of 2009.

My wife who also has an exercise science background is a pharmacist and now works only part-time with that so she can work side-by-side helping me with my businesses. We have a 2-yr old daughter and it's the greatest thing in the world to now have structure and systems in my business allowing me to spend time with my family and not still putting in 16 hour days like I did for several years.

2. How has being a part of PTU impacted your career / business?

Fortunately my fitness businesses have been very successful and being a part of PTU has certainly been a contributing factor. I sometimes get information overload and have too many great ideas and act on none of them. I'm a huge believer in the mastermind concept Napoleon Hill talks about and love being able to share ideas, strategies, etc. with other fitness professionals doing some of the same things I am. There's no need to think twice. We can all model success from others and learn from others mistakes. PTU seems to have great members who are not only successful but also willing to take the time to reach out and help other members through the forum. And obviously the PTU articles, tools, interviews, etc. posted by the best of the best in this industry are always great content and I've gotten some great ideas from these. PTU has given me support and the opportunity to make new friendships with like-minded professionals which is so much better than being out there trying to figure it all out on your own. When I started my boot camps in January we went from 9 campers to over 160 campers in less than 4 months and much of the rapid success I can attribute to things I've learned from being a part of PTU.

3. What are your 3 biggest tips for your fellow PTU Members?

The first tip I can share is that you've got to decide what you want your business to look like long-term and what steps you need to take to achieve this. You need to have a clear plan for your business and not just go along day to day working in the business but not actually building and growing your business. I struggled with this myself at one time but it's crucial to have a master plan and once you have this you can create a laser-like focus on it. It's very important to have this written down on paper and reviewed and updated regularly.

My second tip is don't be afraid of failure. Some of the most famous successful people of all time had many failures before achieving their successes. Lord knows I've made many mistakes and had some failures but I've always learned valuable lessons from them. The worse thing is to do nothing and let fear of failure control you. Take action and if you screw up big deal.

It's not the end of the world. You learn from it and now you know what not to do next time.

My third tip is you have to follow your passion and continue learning. If you don't truly love what you do I'd recommend changing it as soon as possible. Otherwise you'll burn out and never be truly successful. And there is more to being successful than just money. We all want to make lots of money and be financially secure including myself and there's nothing wrong with that. But I get so much satisfaction knowing that every day I get to help someone improve their life. We all as fitness professionals have this opportunity and it shouldn't be taken lightly. I think we should be proud we're in this industry and continue learning and improving ourselves so that we can become more successful and also better serve our clients and make a difference in more peoples lives along with our own.
